Bearing in mind that the "traditional" greenhouse has a brick or timber base, usually up to the height of the staging, the modern greenhouses have glass or plastic to ground level. At the end of the season I'm replacing the bottom layer of two of SWMBO's greenhouses with timber.
The local builders merchant cut me some 8x4 sheets of exterior 12mm ply to approx. 2 foot squares and they're perfect to replace the bottom "course" of glazing. Sealant from the local £1 shop fixes them perfectly and they're nearly all painted now with Fencelife ready to go in. The top edge of each can be taped with 2" aluminium tape to prevent water penetration, and if you're not planning to grow at ground level (definitely less backbraking ) it makes an easy fix for timber staging as well. Under storage also means you're not going to break anything if you push it to the back
I reckon the only reason they're glazed to the floor now is cost as the traditional style would be more expensive to produce, but this is a relatively inexpensive and simple fix for that. It also looks pretty neat too.
You could of course go for a more expensive and better look using T&G vertcal boards with a timber top rail but the plywood is an easier option.
