There are lots of designs from Google search for relatively cheap and easy DIY fruit and cider presses. The most expensive component always being the screw system. You can overcome this by replacing the screw system with a cheap scissor jack for cars. Most people leave them in the boot when their cars are scrapped so a trip to the local breakers yard can usually yield one up for a pound or two. These always have a top and bottom plate which can be easily drilled to fix to larger plywood plattens if they don't already have holes in them.

Old net curtains are also ideal for wrapping up the "cheeses" before pressing.

Make the press about 12" square and the jack will work fine then stand the whole thing in a deep sided plastic tray to collect the juices.
