Can anyone tell me what this is....?

The attached are pictures taken from a tree in our garden - can anyone tell me what it is?
The tree is full of fruit this year - although it does not seem to produce every year for some reason. The pictures attached look like some sort of plum and they do have a hard pip in the middle ..... but I think from memory, that the fruit does get quite a bit larger than this.
I have tasted these and they seem perfectly edible - just curious really.
Any help would be welcome.
