And, you can grow tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and greens anytime you want. Think gardening 365 days a year. On the first day of winter I have ripe tomatoes in my basement.

Jack, I would like to thank you for sharing your Hydroponics hobby with us, I have read your blog from start to finish and found it most interesting. I have built myself a small Deep Water Culture unit to give it a try, using a plastic storage container. I have looked into the power issue further I have used Low Energy bulbs. I have 1 x 25w giving an output of 150W 6400k and 1 x 45W giving an output of 225W 2700k. Running for 14 hours per day and the total power cost is only about £3 per month. I have included an air stone and small pump for circulation and aeration. I am using a DIY nutrient solution which has cost £1.75 per litre so the whole thing is low budget. I now have Basil and Lettuce on the go and will post progress.

I am keen to have a go at the Ebb and Flow system you favour and would appreciate some detailed info on the build of your units. Thanks again for inspiring me to embark on a new hobby which I am sure will give great enjoyment. Your feedback would be most welcome.

Your system should be fine for lettuce and herbs.

I am glad you are enjoying hydroponics. It is good clean fun. There are plenty of good links for building an ebb and flow system. It is very simple and pretty much any container will work. I use restaurant bus tubs myself. Here is a link with the basic instructions.

Default Hydroponic peppers

I started one pepper seed on Christmas Day 2011 and in early March of 2012 the plant has more than fifteen large peppers. Hydroponic growing is very productive.

Yes, it was grown under a 126 watt LED light. As the weather permits I am putting it in the greenhouse in the afternoon. One seed, fifteen peppers. I calculate it costs me less than a cent apiece for these beauties.

In addition to vegetables and flowers I have found that my bonsai can also be grown hydroponically. This tree has been grown hydroponically in coir and perlite for the last two seasons and it has never looked so good.

Jack, I am just about to build a Flood & Drain system. I have suitable trays but I am stumped for the fittings for the flood tray. Can you please tell me what fittings you used for your inlet from the pump and overflow on your large flood tray?

It would be best to buy them from a hydroponic site. Here is a link showing the type of fittings you will need. If there are no local dealers you might look online.

This is interesting Jack, I went to a local Hydroponic Store and for a very similar Ebb & Flow fitting kit to that on your link the price was $25 I declined. Will be cheaper to pay the postage and order from the States.
