Default Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

I finally finished the amazing volumes of the "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" by Edward Gibbon, It is uncanny how relevant it is today. The area of discussion is the same area of conflict in today's world.

Little has changed. It is still a dog eat dog world. The religions are still contending for power, and the silent majority sits idly by, assuming that it doesn't matter, until it is too late and one religion suddenly has power, then the dogma becomes "I will make a believer out of every one or kill you in the attempt."

If you're looking for similar, a book I found very interesting on the subject and how it's relevent to todays world is "A Peoples History of Rome" by Michael Parenti.

Amazon.co.uk: Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People's History of Ancient Rome: Michael Parenti: Books

There are some good podcasts available to listen of talks of his too on the topic here:

I've got Gibbon's 'Decline and Fall' in six (!) Everyman's Library volumes, dating from the early 60s (I bought them second-hand a few years ago). I might get round to reading it one day.
