I hate to tell you this, but downloading e-books is illegal unless the author or publisher themselves have released it as a free e-book... it's the same as downloading mp3s or videos online...

I have a Kindle and there are loads of books for free around (even on the Amazon site). Its very handy but not that brilliant in displaying diagrams (and pics are in black and white).
Given time I reckon they will make paper books a niche market.

If you are thinking of writing and publishing your own book, ebooks is by far the cheapest way to go about it too.

Smile Film clips on e books?

Do any of the e books have bits of film to show you how to mke compost or have people talking about what they do and how they get the best out of their allotments?

This site looks really useful and as I have just joined ths is my first contribution.

I use a Kindle and get Ebooks from Amazon and the Gutenberg Project. Only those which are out of copyright are free (generally this means over 70 years old). Paid for versions are usually 25% to 33.333% of the price of hard printed shop copies (you are not allowed to re-distribute in print or by electronic file0.

The Kindle is a different technology, it uses a display system called E-Ink and as such it only displays static text and diagrams. The advantage of this is that it only uses power from the battery when the page is changed, a full charge can last up to a month. It can display .pdf files (it's best if they are in columns), I often scan a map to make a .pdf file and then be able to read it from the Kindle. I have not yet tried making a .pdf file out of a photo to see if it can do greyscale.
