Default Recommended Gardening Books

Hi everyone,

I thought I should get this new forum section started by posting a few books that I like and recommend.

Compost - by Ken Thompson
"The natural way to make food for your garden." This book has a gorgeous corrugated jacket, making it the ideal present for experienced and amateur gardeners, allotment owners and recycling enthusiasts alike

The Half Hour Allotment - by Lia Leendretz
Aimed at the new generation of gardeners who want to enjoy the taste of their own food, but who have little time to spare. Expert advice and innovative techniques show you how to tend a plot without becoming a slave to it.

Grow Your Own Veg - by Carol Klein
This is a lavishly illustrated, easy-to-follow, practical and inspiring beginner's handbook to everything anyone ever needs to know to grow vegetables, salads and herbs all year round, whatever the size of your garden.

The Complete Book of Vegetables, Fruits and Herbs - by a few people, lol
The UK's leading gardening experts present a comprehensive guide to selecting, cultivating, harvesting and cooking vegetables, herbs and fruit. Wonderfully illustrated in a clear and accessible layout, this is a real must-have for any gardener or cook.

All of those books are fantastic and are all must reads!

I have got a copy of Grow Your own Veg.

I find it very useful to dip in and out of and it has sensible advice.

I like a reference book to be either subject specific or time specific. GYOV is of the former. You can check out any particular veg.

I also have The Allotment handbook by Caroline Foley which is useful reference. It has a directory of vegetables but also goes through the calendar year which I find very helpful.

One of my favourite books is 'Allotment Gardening' by Susan Berger.Part One is about getting started, soil preparation, compost making, which tools to acquire etc. then onto sowing and planting with a useful gardener's calendar. There are also recipes to use your harvest, plus a troubleshooting guide to common pests.

My most useful book is The Vegetable And Herb Expert by Dr. Hessayon. It covers all the main vegetables and is one of the first books I bought.

That is a great book, I got mine signed by Alan Titchmarsh himself early last year. In fact, that's one of the reasons I like that book

I used to have an autographed copy - a 'friend' asked to borrow it and despite my asking I have never had it back.

I never lend any more.

Thumbs up Recommendation..

I have finished reading Life on a hillside allotment .. He is the Chap from Radio 2. Interestingly I knew him from the Big Dig.

Its about 90% about him and his life and 10% about what he does on his allotment, if you where a fan of the big dig as i am, then you may find this book very interesting as it has more depth about the other people who allotment around him.

He is also doing a blog on the SAGA website.. http://www.saga.co.uk/magazine/allotmentblog/

Check my blog!

I recently posted a list of books as I was unable - due to ill health - to get into the garden.

Last update on blog was yesterday!
