I went to the following site Recyclenow.com. Home composting section and found there is a post code listing. Enter your post code and see if you can get one. Some council's do not take part. They do subsidise them.It worked for me it's just been delivered waited 3 weeks not a bad bin for FREE and no post or fees of any sort. Regards Marmite

I got my compost bin from that website - I had to pay for mine though but only £15 for the big one (Con 330)

All I need now is a similar site that does water butts....? Any ideas anyone

Default Hello

Sorry you had to pay. I hope you tried your freinds addresses as well as I can get it free but my mother in same town could not. Have you thought about contacting the web site to see if they can help. Water buts recycled from plastic waste now theres an idea. Regards from Marmite

Thanks for the info Marmite

I'm the proud owner of two 330 litre bins which arrived in under 36 hours

Tomorrow I'm picking up two large plastic barrels from here

John Arthur Transport

for an experiment. I'm going to make a "21 day" composter with internal venting with one and an "easy sieve" with the other. The composter is based on this one

Compost Tumbler

but the sieve is my own idea. The plan is to cut off the bottom of the barrel and replace it with either mesh or a shop bought sieve depending on the barrel diameter. I reckon if it's about quarter full I'll be able to rock it easily backwards and forwards and the sieved soil should exit through the bottom. It might end up a two man job with perhaps two ropes attached to the top with each pulling in turn to keep the mometum going, or a pulley with me pulling left and right alternately. Better than the gym I'd guess.

The two 330's are for different uses as well. One already contains what I'd describe as "good" materials and the other already has quite a bit of "bad" stuff in it icluding some bindweed and creeping buttercup. The last bin is a long term plan and I'm planning to leave it for a couple of years minimum on the assumption that even the garden horrors will eventually compost down and lose their nasty habit of regenerating. I'm hoping two decent summers will kill even them off in the bin. Any thoughts on that?

Hi WillontheWall Thanks so much for sharing your DIY compost bin with us. I have been thinking recently about how on earth I could make my own tumbling bin, as I am not strong enough to fork the contents of my own "static", and therefore I'm not really sure what's going on at the bottom! However, I'm a woman on my own ... and the technicalities of your build leave me with a feeling of a panic attack coming on ... I have a free standing black composter which I obtained free from the Council about four years ago, and regularly put kitchen waste, grass cuttings, etc into it. Well, that's been four years without much of a fork, and it's still not full. What will be happening at the bottom?

Sounds good to me and probably better than a plastic bin anyways

Well done

Ty, Hubby made a few things for me in reclaimed wood. Free and biodegradeble.
