You should be able to shove long lengths of cardboard into a garden shredder.

If you have a good paper shredder (the sort people use to shred their credit card bills) this may cope with lightweight cardboard.

If you have a shredder you can shred woody prunings and thin branches. The material will break down much faster in this form. I just have a cheap shredder from Argos and it's fine, though it jams if you try to put thick branches through it.

Until you have a shredder John Boy you could try wetting the cardboard as this makes it much easier to tear up.

They all shred leaves up to a point. If you do a lot without putting twigs though they can bung up though. A garden vac will also shred leaves.

A garden shredder is an expensive thing to buy just to shred cardboard though. Maybe you could borrow one for a couple of days from a neighbour?
