Question Potato Haulms (tops) in compost

Can anyone tell me, Can you put potato haulms, The green leafy parts, in the compost bin?
My dad (who may have been Noah's gardener) has told me that potatoes are related to the deadly nightshade plant?! and if you put the tops into your compost it will poisen your plants next year. Now I've known my dad for fourty five years (obviously) and I can't remember him ever growing anything, except weeds, but he swears its true.
Please help !

Hi Ian, it is perfectly safe to compost the haulms of potato plants. Potatoes, tomatoes and deadly nightshade are all part of the solanaceae family. Some potato plants produce tiny round fruits on the plants and these are highly poisonous. So part of what your Dad told you was correct.

Thanks Lesley,
I bet he's right more by good luck than good judgement....
I'm pleased though as I did use them last year and if he had been right everything I've planted this year would have to go

I can sleep peacefully now........Ian
