Smile Which compost?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to find out which compost is best to use for my container veg? Do I need to get a special one or will a multi purpose one do as long as I feed? Should I use growbags (emptied into the pots)?

Thanks for any advice!

Helen

Hi, igorina. I just use a normal Multi. ( Usually the B&Q ones) I just plant up and then start feeding after about a month. I only use growbag contents for the Hanging Baskets. Hope that helps a bit

as long as you feed well compost doesn't really matter a whole lot some are better than others some have fertiliser in that lasts longer than others best thing to do is read the bag i usually put a handful of pelleted chicken manure in mine when i plant then start feeding later

If you use a soil based compost such as John Innes or a general purpose compost with added John Innes then your containers wont dry out as quickly. It will also add weight to the containers, which with general purpose compost in, can be a bit lightweight and could blow over.

HI Igorina, try adding some water retaining crystals, they help to keep the compost moist in very dry weather.

Hi igorina. Dunno where you live but if you're anywhere a SCATS theyre doing a 3 for 2 offer on 75ltrs of compost. They do a "vegetable compost". That might be a useful one to use.

Most garden centres will be doing at least a 3 for £10 deal and some even a 4 for £10 dont go for the horizon peat free though its rubbish erin or levingtons are both good as is westland
