Default Potato Common Scab

Hi all... I have just emptied my first potato bin and have had a yield of 3.5lbs. not bad but I think I should have left them a little longer. Planted end of July... Maris something. HOWEVER... I ahe also had a nasty shock... they have Common Scab ( easy to identify)... now I do not know why. They were planted in compost and no soil... maybe I did not water correctly.
Mt problem now is what do I do with the compost.. Iwas going to keep for the next batch of spuds but I think that would be a bad idea but I would desperatly like some help and advice.

ANY IDEAS PLEASE....... take care... Frederick

Common Scab is at it`s worst in dry conditions, so I think you are right in suspecting your watering of them. They are still edible as it only affects the skin. I agree, you should play safe and use the compost elsewhere rather than for more spuds.
