Default Growing vegetables in containers/pots

I have 3 areas where I grow veg , rotating what goes where each year. Each bed is about 4'x12'. Space is of a premium. Currently I don't grow carrots, beetroot, onions or caulis. So my question is simple...

Can I grow any of these in containers?

Hello and welcome. Carrots yes, beetroot yes but use golfball size, onions yes. Last season I grew all of the above with good results, just make sure drainage is good and dont forget to water. Caulis I dont know, I think you would need a very big container for those. Hope you have a good crop and let us know how you get on. I only started veg growing last year and recived a lot of help. I also joined my local HS to learn and I am showing my vegies this year Ha Ha. Marmite

Horticultural society I would think, Rachel. Good evening AJ and welcome to the site. Basically you can grow anything in a container as long as said container is suitable.

Default What's suitable?

An inscrutable answer, David, but... do you know what would be suitable containers for carrots, beetroot, onions and caulis?

For the plants you want to grow I would say you need pots of at least 15 litres capacity.

I use containers about 9 to 12ins deep for carrots and beetroot (golfball size ) onions need a bit deeper if you get small type 15 ins is ok. See if there is any plastic barrels from factory's etc ,Cut top off and Wash out well.I got 4 last year from a fencing firm that install barbedwire on the top of fences. Free is my new word.Marmite

Thanks David and Marmite ( Ma might let me stay uplate if I wash the dishes ) that's been a great help to my 'February plans' - no more than plans because I don't have a greenhouse.

Dont need a green house. Try making a coldframe some planks of wood old glazing units from council tip. Give it a try. Marmite. I do the washing up for Mrs Marmite and she lets me do the ironing for her.

Sounds like you need a potting shed, Marmite.

That's where my grandad used to escape to and it was the basis of his wonderful garden

Grandads always knew best and so did Grandma's . Mine had 1 acre in Walsham le Willows and never run out of veg, eggs, milk etc. The smell of freshly baked bread, cakes and kettle always hot on the Arga coal fire. Happy memories back in 1969.Marmite never thought I would say, Those were the days.

Yes you can, and as always - you probably know about that - at the beginning plants need a lot sun and water. Some of my vegetables haven't raised cause there wasn't warm enough in the room.
