Default Last Year's Muck

Good morning : )

Last year was my first attempt at growing in containers. It went fairly well and I'm having another bash this year.

My question is this:

I threw away all old plants that did not survive the winter and didn't know what to do with the soil from the containers. Can I use the soil again this year or do I have to use fresh compost?

I have re-potted some strawberries already using it and hope that this will be ok!

Hi Kelli, I always use fresh multi purpose compost as I figure that the previous years crops will have taken the 'goodness' out of the compost. I have some deep flower containers and I use the old compost in the bottom half of these containers then top it up with fresh compost. The rest is put on the flower beds.

It`s a false economy to reuse compost. I agree with Lesley, use it to half fill pots or on the flower beds.

Thank you for your help : )

Thankfully, I only re-potted a couple of strawberry plants and I'm sure I can rescue these in time!

On with planting millions of seeds . . .
