The question as regards what you are growing in containers is very good but why dont the answers contain the container sizes.... this is very important.

Hi Frederick, yes it is important! The majority of my containers are 10 inches in diameter and 12 inches deep. If I wanted to grow parsnips or 'normal' sized carrots, rather than a variety especially bred for growing in containers, then I would use a dust bin.

I've got a couple of the old black recycling boxes. Could i drill some holes in them and use them for courgettes? Would you suggest 1 or 2 plants in them?

Hi there SP, welcome to our forum!! If they are the black boxes that Trafford originally gave out for recycling cans and bottles then they will be great containers for veggies. Courgettes are big plants so only grow one plant per box and as you said drill some drainage holes in them.

I managed to get hold of about 200 black bins supermarkets get their flowers delivered in.

Few holes in the bottom and bosh. Plus as a bonus you can pop an empty one on your head and pretend to be a deranged robot.

Perfect for your tomatoes, cut the bottoms of some of them & you have trays as well.

I personally use 5 gallon clay pots. It's good enough for my tomatoes and bitter melons.
