Default watering or over-watering

Im still a little unclear on the watering situation, i understand water when needed so when the soil is dry or weather really hot, but will having my veg stand in a tray of water help them as they have water whn they need it or will it lead to rot??

Hi Tom, this is something that I don't do and I think it could cause root rot. You can buy self watering kits which are basically a tray with capillary matting inserted and rather than the pots of veg standing in water they just draw up what water they need from the capillary matting. You can also buy the capillary matting on it's own.
