I am growing courgettes for the first time, using a trough container--2 per container. I am amazed to see a bud open up to a bright yellow flower. There was also a bud dropped off, I have saved it. There are many other buds appearing below the present flower.
I would like to know what happens next? Do I need to do anything regards pollination and if so --what? The trough is in a plastic mini GH. I am thinking off removing platic cover completely, is this wise? I will try to attach pic. but not too good at it Cheers |

Hi Royboy, definitely remove the cover and put the courgette plants outside to let the bees, wasps and insects pollinate the female flowers then you will be able to eat your own home grown courgettes!!
But, as Tim asked what variety are you growing and what size is the trough??

Hi Royboy, courgettes are extremely big plants, with some growing to about 3 foot wide.
I've just checked and Black Beauty is not a climbing courgette plant so I very much doubt that the trough you have two plants in will be big enough for both plants. Would you be able to carefully transplant one into another container that ideally should be at least 10 inches (25cms) in diameter and 12 inches (30cms) deep?? If you were growing the courgette plants in the ground then the recommended spacing between plants is 3 foot or 1 metre. ![]()

A note on the flowers...the first flowers to open will be male - they will be on a thin stem & can drop off, the next flowers to come will be female & will already have the start of a courgette at the base...these shouldn't fall off.
Agree with the above - courgettes need space & can get quite large....you'll need the pollinating help of insects as well. Courgettes shouldn't need to be grown under cover as they're pretty prolific plants...you'll be wondering what to do with them all later in the summer! |
