Not much joy in the garden this week. See my tomato thread.

But made some tasty green tomato chutney. Very pleased with myself as I havent made that before.

And yesterday to cheer me up my Mum said she would buy me a greenhouse. She is just so special - I love her to bits.

So next question. Any thoughts on what is a good greenhouse. Any advice, as usual, is gratefully recieved.

Andii

Things are looking better!

Today I have harvested some of my cucumbers and have made cucumber soup! Haven't tried it yet but it smells delicious.

Also harvested some green beans for tea! And the courgettes are making a comeback.

Hi Andii,

Haven't had chance to come on here for a while, I was gutted to read your toms thread, can't believe the blight spread to your potatoes too, but was glad to read that you won't be giving up!

So far my toms have been ok, they are ripening very slowing, I've probably had about a dozen so far. We've had a tremendous amount of rain the last few days though and a few of the toms that were red, but not really really red actually split their skins, I picked them and ate them in a salad and they were ok, excetp for being a little bit mushy.

i picked my last 2 cucumbers at the weekend, I can't see anymore growing at the minute or any more flowers, so that might be the end of the cukes for this year.

We've had two fist sized Aubergines so far and days after picking them so of the tiny ones still on the plants have ballooned!

I've had tons of male flowers on my courgettes but very few female flowers and only some of those got fertilised so not had many courgettes.

How're your sweetcorn, peas and green beans doing?

Nicola

Hi Nicola

I still have 2 tom plants producing icle tiny toms! The potatoes made a come back and I think they will be ok.

The peas are getting nice fat pods. I must admit I have eaten a few while pottering about in the garden .

The green beans have gone crazy. We have eaten quite a lot of those and they were delicious, if I say so myself! But they are beginning to look tired now.

And the corn is doing great. I just hope the weather is ok for the next few weeks.

I have noticed a squash appearing but are still waiting for an aubergene to show itself.

So all in all apart from the toms, I am pleased with my first years effort. And looking forward to next year!

Hope all is well with you and yours

Andii

Harvested the last of the peas. So here is the photo and they taste delicious, they probably won't make it to be cooked!

Lovely!
I find all cabbages really attractive with their deep green-purple tints...
I grew kale for this reason although I'm not the only one with an eye on them, the caterpillars have munched a good deal.

Hi again Andii,
Just seen you successfully made a nice green tomato chutney; I'd be so grateful if you could share your recipe!
I got one on the Internet - see ingredients - what do you think of it? Is yours similar? I didn't think I should put sultanas in there but why not...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
500g green tomatoes
500g red onion
250g sultanas
250g brown sugar
2 tbsp Salt
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp ground green cardamom
500ml Malt vinegar
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cheers,

Sophie

Hi Sophie

So sorry I have only just seen your post!

Yes your recipe is identical to the one I followed but I left out the cardamom. And I only had half of the sultanas but it tastes delicious. I was too gentle with the simmering and it took 1 1/2 hours !!! I was getting a bit fed up with all the stirring.

Oh my gosh I ended up with loads of tomatoes - most were still green but we picked them all the other week and there were over 100. I put them in a tuppawear box lined with kitchen paper left on the side in the kitchen with lid off and low and behold, they have nearly all gone red, only about a dozen left now

We've been getting loads of chillis too, I brought the plants indoors before they flowered (think it was August) and some of them are still flowering and producing chillis!

Looking forward to next year

Here we go with joy of joys 2011.

Didnt get the greenhouse in the end - mortgage payment instead

But got the 2 mini greenhouses full to the brim with my veggies. Had a disaster earlier in the year when the wind blew one over and the seeds were scattered. So ditched all that hard work and started again. And things are going well.

Almost everything has started to grow. Tomatoes, spring onions, cabbage, cauli, peppers, lettuce, broccoli, green beans, peas, radishes, pumpkins, celery, cucumber, red onions, beetroot, potatoes, sweetcorn and cat nip!

Hope you are all well and happy.
