an update on this, ive just bought 300litres of eco mulch for £10, im having some horse manure delivered from a reliable source so hopefully completley chemical free and ive still got a big box of granula veg food which it says to use twice a year.

The plan is to grow some green manure when the crops are finished then mix in a mix of eco mulch and horse manure, especially manure where the potatos will grow next year, then increase the drainage in each pot by adding gravel to the bottom and mixing in some of the veg food i have to break down over the winter. ill cover it all up where i can so the nutrients im adding dont just leech back out.

anyone got any thoughts on this???

Hiya,
I think that's a very good plan :-)
Not done this before either, but Alys Fowler says she use manure for her 100L toms and potato container, and didn't have to change the compost.

I bought crimson clover this week end for over the winter (i'd also like something hardier) and I'll use that.
I'll also cut the stalks of the legumes I grew this year, and dig them in.
I'll have my brassicas here next year.

I'm also thinking I could try to add worms to my big 115L container. Any comments and experience of that anyone? I may try a smaller scale beforehand...

My plan to eke out the compost was to use the potato compost to grow beans in next year (so long as not blighted of course), and the bean compost to earth up the potatoes, enriching both with chicken poo.

At the moment all my crop is in pots (very small garden).

The year after that I want to use the compost to improve my soil - it is thick and heavy clay as I want to put in a raised bed for herbs.

Is this feasible?

Thanks

I wish I could answer your question Principia but sorry I don't really know!
