Hi Tony,

For salads, radish, strawberries and thyme I think you can get away with 10 cms;
For most other herbs as well as peas say 15 cm,
Most other vegs are said to be happier if you can provide at least 45 cm depth but I got away with 20 cms for my tomatoes (Gardener's Delight) and beans, although beans really should do better next year if I plant deeper. Next year also I'll do Tumbling Toms, they are the 'hanging basket trailing tomatoes' so should be happier that others in containers.

Is there anything that you have planted less deep but still grew properly? If so let me know, I'd be happy to know!

Oh, and courgettes are wide too, so the pot should be 45 cm diameter too.

Happy growing,

Tom

Ok perhaps 15 cm for peas is a bit short, mine were actually at 20 cm.
If someone else has got thoughts...

Hi Antonio

I think Gardening Which? Magazine did a report on this a year or two ago. I think the general result was the bigger the pot the bigger the crops up to a point. I'm sure I have the magazine somewhere I'll dig it out and let you know the results.

Hi Antonio

I have found the report, June 2002. It shows there is an optimum sowing rate depending on what weight / size crop you’re looking for and thus how big a pot you need for a certain crop. Took awhile to find it as I didn’t go back far enough in my back issues! But an ex-colleague who still works there helped me out by finding it for me in their library. Only problem is the PDF he sent is too big to post, so I have scanned it as 4 jpg’s and hope you can read it. If you want the PDF version PM me with your email and I'll email it to you.
