i simply use what i can afford but try to make sure its peat free so as my veg growing isnt at a cost to the planet.

Yes, I agree with you Tim!!
It's expensive but I'll do all I can to avoid compost with peat.

I heard mixed reviews about peat-free compost results but so far my vegs seem quite happy...

Oh also Tony,
To fill your containers as best as possible, it will be good to put some rocks or polystryrene bits at the bottom (to improve drainage of the compost). I went to Homebase they were happy to give me polystyrene bits.
Then if you can put a layer of well rotted manure above the rocks (about 20% of the total height) it'll be a food store for your vegs. This I also found in shops...
Then you put your multi-purpose compost, ideally peat-free.
Voila!

Do some veg grow better in peat free compost anyway, I have a crops in pots book which says to plant onions in peat free compost, or is it just an environment thing?
