Talking Newbie!

Hi all

New to this site and to the 'grow your own' thing but really want to have a go for next year especially as I have a little girl who I would like to encourage eat healthily and learn where her food comes from!

So I dont have a space to plant in the ground but have about 12 different sized large planters, a grow bag or two and a windowbox. I have been given a few things to start – seed packets for lettuce and some salad leaves, a few herb seeds, some sweet pepper seeds, spring onions and french beans….however I dont really have a clue where to start! My uncle has also sent me a huge 'big purple' garlic bulb from the isle of wight where his friends grow them for sale!

Can someone offer some advice on where to get started and top tips so I may succeed with at least a few things! Also how do you grow the garlic?! Because i love it! Is it too late or early to do it now?!

Thanks in advance - I cant wait to get started!!

Jenni

Once you get used to it it's easy Each year you'll learn when is right to plant certain seeds! A good tip if you intend to plant onions is wait till the daffodills appear. This means that the temperature is warm enough

I'm new to all this too and equally excited and anxious! I'm trying the potato bag approach but no idea if I will succeed.

I grew sweet peppers on my windowsill last year and got a nice little crop. This year I'm planting in pots in the garden only so fingers crossed... Everything I planted outside died last year. I planted peppers and tomatoes.

split the garlic into cloves first, pointed edge goes up, about an inch under soil, make a hole first rather than just pushing in then put the clove. its so it doesnt compact the soil too much around the clove, i made the mistake of putting the whole bulb straight in last year, d'oh!
