Hello. I'm very new to gardening and even newer to growing veg. I have a few containers and a vegtrug type box and stupidly was under the impression that it's a good idea to dig in horse manure into your soil/compost for most plants/veg. I am currently reading 'vegetable growing month by month' by John Harrison and it mentions to only put manure in soil when it has rotted for a year. I have also read this fact on this site. Unfortunately I have already dug manure into a few of my containers and my large vegtrug and did so around 2 weeks ago.
If I were to remove as much of the manure as possible will it still affect the growing this years veg or will I be able to salvage the compost?? Thanks |

Hi Richie,
You may find that if it's fresh manure it will be too strong for some plants, mainly root veg, as they will be doing all there growing in the manure. If you have a compost bin, I would suggest putting it in there and letting it rot down so you can use it next year ![]() If there's not a lot left in there it probably would be ok as long as it's well mixed in. But if you're in any doubt as to how much is left in there then it would probably be best to change the compost. |
