one of my books suggest twiggy branches pushed into the soil, could try that - at least it would be free. I've got mange tout and have made a wigwam of 4 bamboo canes, but then I needed to add some short sticks going across as the wind was blowing them off the bamboo, they are coming on a treat now

I tend to make a frame out of flower sticks. You know, those green ones, around 2ft long and nice and bendy?
These should be perfect for dwarf peas - I just weave them loosely into wide squares and let the peas find them for themselves... Worked a treat last year.

Twiggy sticks from garden shrub or tree prunings are best if you have them, so that the pea's little tendrils have something to cling on to and twine around, (bamboo cane would be too thick and too smooth). Also they are free and can look very attractive.
And yes, pea netting is needed for the taller varieties, some of the older varieties can grow to 8' but they are very tasty! |
