Default best veg to grow hydroponically?

Hi, i've decided to make use of the dark space under my stairs by growing some veg hydroponically. I'm pretty handy so i'm making my own deep water culture set up. What I really want to know is are some vegetable varieties better than others when using this setup, or can I grow pretty much anything? although i've grown a fair few houseplants in pots in the past, I'm a complete newbie to hydroponics and any advice would be gratefully appreciated! thanks!

Default

there are certain types of plant which seem to respond better to hydroponics than others, toms chillies, cuecumbers and lettuce take to it well, whereas, root crops, brassicas etc are harder/not worth the effort. this is why dutch greenhouses are full of toms and chillies while turnips are still grown in a field.

the varieties which have been specifically bread for hydroponics are, unfortunatley, the same tasteless rubish you get in the supermarkets. any tom or pepper plant will do better with a decent hydro setup so i'd stick to varieties you already like.

just as a side note, i think the reason for tasteless fruit is the obsession with uniformity of size, harvest time etc. veg being grown hydropnically isn't what causes the problem, it's the fact that flavour is no longer the number 1 concern, regardless of the medium used.
