Default Good vegetables/herbs for a beginner?

I have googled such things but I thought I should ask here too as it's always good to have personal input too. I am a complete beginner when it comes to vegetables but I have grown Mint, Chives and Basil (for a short time) before which were mostly successful.

Seeing as I'm not allowed to dig up my garden, I have to use pots etc so any input would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

I grow in containers too, I've found tomatoes really easy, and courgettes (though you sometimes need to be willing to aid pollination) lettuces are easy and there's tonnes of types you could grow. I did mange tout and french beans this year for the first time and was amazed how easy they were to grow.
