Default Autumn Time

Hello everybody, I've just spent the week-end trimming down my hanging basket fuschia's and tucking them up in the greenhouse, and Mr Spider has just moved in, he is huge, but I don't mind so long as he doesn't drop into my hair, I did a bit of weeding, cut the lawn hopefully for the last time, and I have planted a large headed purple Allium in a container with dwarf yellow daffs and some yellow and purple crocus. In another container I have put Hyacinths as I like the smell and planted up some winter pansies, which hopefully will add a bit of colour to the patio, over the long dreary days of Winter. My thoughts are now turning to what I would like to do next Spring, and I thought I might grow some different herbs, garlic, and a variety of veg, which I haven't tried before, has anybody else thought of growing something different, and if so, what?

Hi, rb. I've just planted some garlic at the place I work, for the chef's, really. I'm really tempted to try some Purple Sprouting broc. but it grows into such a large plant that i think it will be too big for a container. Anyone tried it?

Not in a container, no Cajary. I'm always looking for small, fairly quick crops that the Brownies can grow for their gardening badge.

Hi.Tpeers. I like to do the same sort of thing for my g-daughter. Apart from radishes and "Little Gems". (they're lettuces, the lovely Lesley) I'd appreciate any other ideas.

Oh! I've just noticed that I'm a "Senior Member". Does that mean I talk too much or that I'm just an "Old Git"

Being a 'senior member' myself - I won't pass comment!

Things for younger kids at the moment.....

Paperwhite Narsisi - 8 weeks from bulb to flower - nick the g-daughter for an afternoon and grow its parents Xmas present!

Hyacinth - ditto - but remember that some people react to the skin of the bulb - your g-daughter should wear gloves. If you get prepared bulbs and one of those snazzy glass jars she can get to watch the roots grow!

For the Brownie Gardening Badge the girls, amongst other things, have to grow four different flowers, vegetables or herbs from seed or bulb. Not easy in the Autumn and Winter terms!

I would love to grow Angelica - I remember Mum candying it when I was a kid - must remember to do a web search for some - I've never seen it in the shops.

Hi Nicos. I think the correct expression would be "senile moments" In that case, yes
