Default Swede

Hi all, just wondering if any of you have had success growing swede?

I grew some for the first time last year, they germinated really quickly and succesfully, had to thin them twice!

The problem I had was they sort of all pushed themselves out of the soil! Is this normal? Did i do something wrong? Should i have čarthed them up? They were a bit small but I guess that ws because they were too close together!!!

I have some seed left and it seems such a waste not to have another go!
My soil is VERY sandy, just wondering if its not heavy enough to hold them down as it were!!

Many thanks, Sandra

They do tend to push themselves up out of the soil - don't worry!

They can also be quite a long crop - if you want larger root just leave them longer - they can even withstand a light frost!

If you pick the right variety they will withstand a hard frost. Swedes are winter turnips and hale originally from Scandinavia - not the warmest of places.

Many thanks for your replies!

I will give it another go. Plant less and stop worrying about them pushing up!

Anyone doing swede this year ? I sowed some "Marion"back in June in modules and transplanted them, covered them with fleece for a few weeks and they have done really well. There are some good sized roots forming and an awful lot of top growth. They should be ready around the end of Oct

Wow they are looking healthy you lucky thing!

I also sowed Marion and have 1 left thanks to cabbage root fly! This one has pushed itself out of the ground and loks like it has split, i have earthed it up but not holding up much hope!

I will try again next year!

Enjoy your crop

Sandra, I added a good dose of lime to the soil before planting the seedlings , I do this for my brassicas too. I had them covered for a good few weeks with fleece, by chance, this might have kept the root fly at bay at the right time. I've had a good crop and I should lift whats left as they can start to get a bit woody. I've been squishing lots of caterpillars though
