Default WIP Veggie Garden

Thought it was about time to add some pics.

Been in the garden all day and my back is killing me! But as i closed the gate i had a smile on my face so says it all really

Unfortunatly i dont have any pics of how it looked before i started.

We only own half the garden but thankfuly its the side that gets the sun from 11ish untill the sun goes down, and the high brick wall should keep the warmth up.

Rear path access, we have the 1st gate

The wall and the edging bricks that i removed today

Next doors half which i'm using untill the skip arrives!

The growing has started!

Foundation for the wall and tree stump to be removed tomorrow...

I then decided to see what kind of soil i had, wasnt great news Just as well i'll be putting in raised boarders!

Will update when i've done a bit more

if that wall is south or west facing a couple of apples and pears will do well also a cherry (limited crop) if not train wirs and grow runners not to late to plant

Yep it was! But then i guess it was good for me!!

Everything i've grown is needing to go out in the beds now, just need to order the wood so i can put the frames together then fill with soil/compost mixture

Then i have to order to skip to clear away all the mess ive made

Brilliant Adam!! I bet you are looking forward to eating your first vegetables! What varieties are you growing? I can see beans, tomatoes, squash or courgette, garlic and peppers or chillies but what have I missed and what varieties are you growing?

Your efforts should inspire a lot of us. Most people do not have these problems which you have overcome.

Well done. Hope it's all a great success.

Cheers

Hi adam - nice job. Hope the produce is doing well.

I'm new to this gardening lark and have a similar project on my hands. Our back garden at the moment is a mass of rubble and weeds (I'll attempt to get some pictures). I'm hoping to get some raised beds in this year, prep the soil which is sandy clay and get it ready for my first attempt at growing next year. Our garden is south facing so gets the sun when it decides to show itself!

So i'm thinking of herbs in planters under kitchen window which is also south facing (already have some dill and parsley growing in seed trays on the window sill inside, coriander hasn't germinated yet but only 1.5 weeks gone) and 2 raised beds on the garden (approx 3m x 1.2m each). Want to try carrots, broccoli, potatoes etc. Also quite fancy strawberrys and rubarb at some stage.

Any hints or tips? Best veg / fruit to grow for a beginner.. etc..

All help appreciated.

Hi Jim, the easiest vegetable to grow has to be courgette. With two plants you will be over run with them! Another easy and tasty veg is climbing french beans. These are self pollinating so no need to worry about the shortage of pollinating insects if we have another cold summer next year.

Carrots and potatoes need depth to grow so either dig over the garden where your raised beds will be or grow these in containers. You can grow potatoes in buckets, one seed potato per bucket and just tip out one bucket at a time to harvest fresh spuds.

Strawberries can be grown in hanging baskets as well as tumbling tomatoes.

grow strawberry's in gutters or troughs bolted to the wall carrots probably were too dry to germinate
great start if you feed well you can grow beans closer than you have spaced them
