Default onions dividing

This years crop of onions has a lot of bulbs that look normal but when the outer skin is removed there are two distinct parts - rather like chestnuts in their prickly pod. Is this due to the rather damper than usual growing conditions? The onions were grown from sets of unknown provenance so that also may account for it. Ideas anyone?
