Question Newbie looking for a head start this year

Dear all,

I've just got an allotment - my first. Too much clearing work to get seeds etc in yet - so may need some plug plants later in the year - need to get some results this year. So to my request - can anybody recommend a web based source of plug plants that the have had good service from, or a local nursery near Derby.

Not sure if your can post web links or names on this forum.

All the best

George

Yes you can post links to relevant sites selling plug plants so I have removed your email address for your security George. - Lesley.

Cool

Hi TempleBell,

Why don't you grow your own plug plants ??
By some pots, cells from Wilko's and a cheap greenhouse from Argos or B& M's and put the greenhouse on your allotment. When you've cleaned enough area to put the plugs in they should be a good size.

Veggie plug plants can work out quite expensive especially if you want to fill an allotment Seeds started off in modules are much cheaper and you still have plenty of time to get most sown. It might be an idea to get a bed turned over and broken up into a fine tilth so you can have a go at sowing some seeds directly into the soil.

plug plants - check b&q from time to time, they were selling off slightly damaged vegetable plug plants for 10p a tray last year. people scowled at my allotments and asked why i didnt just put artificial plants in and be done with it! but i had a new baby and not much time. i dont see the problem ... otherwise, ebay is always worth a go or in the past i have bought from Organic Plants - Home Page as well. they are a good way of getting a head start or catching up if you havent planted in time. you ll still get plenty of enjoyment and a load a delicious fresh veg!

My sincere apologies for not acknowledging your posts - been without a computor for the past months. Only managed to get back on line.

But the good news I managed to get some beetroot, radish, rocket, and dwarf beans to grow from seed = most pleased with the results. Best thing about it all is that the mass of varieties that are avaible from seed rather than the mass produced plugs in the stores.

Look forward to talking with you all soon.
