Could the thing with the springs on be the choke so when engine starts either a cable or manual leaver will need to move to open. It also could be fuel starvation dirty filter in tank/pipe/ carb. Its not an electrical prob as engine starts so get cleaning the fuel lines drain out old fuel flush through and put fresh fuel in. Hope this helps. Regards from Marmite.

Let it idle for a while and then slowly increase the throttle. It may be the jets in the carb which often get clogged with dirt. It really depends on how the motor is set up. Try looking for a mixture screw to adjust the idle.
Oh and water in the fuel does this as well. |

You don't say if it's four or two stroke. I would think that either of them sounds like you have fuel starvation from your carburettor running jets. Thery could do with cleaning out it could also be a restriction in the fuel feed line. Petrol goes off aftre a while so putting fresh in the tank may help. The springs sound like return springs that close down the carb when running. If you have a heavy smell of fuel when it conks out then maybe flooding bit I doubt it. The choke is usually a butterfly valve that as you close the choke the valve closes out the airflow. Make sure if your choke is a manual you are not using it. Allow you machione to warm up a bit before use. I would not mess with setting jets unless you know what your doing as you could cause more problems. You could try removing jets with care and seeing if they are blocked. Is the air filter clean?. does the engine run alright with air filter removed?, indicates air starvation. try this and hopefully you'll be sucessfull if not then a local garden equipment shop should help and save you a lot of frustration and bad language even if it does cost a few bob. If you seriously muck it up it's an expensive thing to replace. Good luck and I hope I have been of some, if little help.

On the side of the carb is a screw with a spring around it that is the mixture screw with the engine stopped screw it all the way in and then screw it out one and a half turns and set the spark plug gap to 30 thou the engine should run at that and then fidle with the mixture screw out a bit and you will hear when then the engine is sweet and that should do it
