Default Spuds gone bonkers

Hi Folks,

My spuds had grown a huge amount of foiliage and I feared they would be 'all top and no crop' I took the drastic measure of cutting some of this foliage back so the plants energy goes into producing tubers.

I did this for both my earlies and my mains

My question is - did I do right?

Regards

Peatricia

So long as you didn't cut too much off I guess it wont hurt, but its the foliage that provides the energy through photosynthesis to produce a good crop.
Plenty of haulm usually = plenty of spuds, biggest risk with loads of top is from potato blight.

Default me too

Hi

I had the same bother with mine last year when I used mushroom compost, too much nitrogen in it with the chicken muck...It never dawned on me to cut the tops back...sounds like a great idea.....Let us know how they do.....

Cheers

Ian

Ye this has happened to me on more than one occasion, generally I just leave them as DaveB said its the foliage that creates the energy for growth, Im sure you will have a bumper crop.
