If it hasn't been well looked after you could improve your future crops enormously by sowing a green manure mix now, it'll germinate this time of year, give lots of green growth which will put nitrogen in the soil and, good news, green manure will suppress weeds. Just watch out for rye though as it inhibits seed germination, so you don't want that on beds you'll be sowing in directly.
