Question Onion sets

Hi, Could anyone tell me if it is possible to buy onion sets that will produce onions of equivelent size to Robinsons Mammoth? I watched a programme that seemed to indicate that the grower had used turbo sets. Fergy.

Fergy, if you want to grow big onions, then why not go for Mammoth itself? The seed can be obtained from www.mammothonion.co.uk

Default Onion sets

Hi David,
Thanks for your comments.
I already grow Robinsons mammoth from seed, sowing on boxing day.
The reason I raised the question was on the Veg Out programme last week the onions this chap grew gave the impression they were from sets and if this was so I can't see the point of taking all that time and care when he got results equal to my seed raised onions. John

Hi Fergy, I've grown Showmaster onions from both sets and young plants available from Marshall's Seed but the delivery was very late arriving and although I grew some really great sized onions that tasted fabulous they just didn't have the growing time to reach the size I wanted for the show bench.

Misunderstood you Fergy, as for Turbo onions. They are bred from Sturon. I`ve tried growing them once but thought they weren`t as good as the parent. I believe they are a Sturon / Stuttgarter cross. So I don`t think they would beat Mammoth, anyway.
