Default Complementory Planting

This was mentioned to me as a way of getting pests away from your veggies?
I didn't get chance to ask more questions as I was rushed, so what is it and what is good with what?

Any of the onion family are pretty good at detering aphids when planted amongst other plants. Tagetes/marigolds also work well, especially in the greenhouse.
