Default Does size matter?

Having got my new plot on Sunday. I was wondering how big other peoples allotment plots are? Mine is a 3/4 plot which is good because I only have to pay 3/4 ground rent and it's less weeds to clear! However I was wondering if the size might limit me in the future.

My plot is 8m wide by 20m long. How big is yours?

Hi Andy,

Firstly, I like what you called this thread.

I don't have an allotment as I'm lucky enough to have a large garden but 8m x 20m sounds big to me. I'm sure you could grow loads on a space that size.

Hi Andy. I don't have an allotment but I can offer a bit of advice. Two years ago my garden was roughly the same size as yours and I thought it was big enough but by the time I tried to wedge everything I wanted to plant, it was too small, so last year I almost doubled the size and it was still too small so this year I increased it again by about 25% and that's about all the expansion I can have so now I have to be pretty selective in what I plant. That's what you'll have to decide. If you're going to plant row crops like peas, beans, or carrots along with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and the like you'd probably be ok, but if you want to plant vining type veggies like melons, cucs, or squash you may run into space limits (the vine plants are what take up 60% of my room, but I love the melons) but even then there are bush varieties that take up alot less room. It all boils down to what you want to plant. I would encourage you to make a rough map of your alotment and then try to fit in what you want to plant. You can look up how much room things take up at some of the on-line garden catalog sites. I do this every year to help decide what I'm planting and where. It also helps for the next year in rotating crops to different parts of the garden. Hope this helps a little bit. Good luck.
