Default Green Manures Advice

Hi there,

Have been reading about green manures which I want to try out this season to get some nutrients into the soil and perhaps make it a little easier to work (quite heavy clay at the allotment).

I have bought Winter Tares and Field Beans as they overwinter well. I also have a packet of Crimson Clover but wonder if it is too late to plant this now?

I have read that you must be careful to consider what veg groups you have had, and are having in each bed- that this will dictate the best green manure to use. So my question is, which green manure should be sown on which bed?

I have a 4 year rotation with 8 beds (2 for each veg group). The 4 groups I have are Potatoes, Beans+Peas+Onions/leeks, Brassicas and Salads, Roots

Any suggestions? Thanks for the advice...

Depends a bit in what area you are and what your overall general temperature and weather conditions are in your place. The best is to start just when spring turns to summer. Wish you the best of luck!
