Default Earthing up leeks

We've heard that you can lengthen leeks by building the earth up around the base, or that you can use toilet roll to the same effect. Our question is, 'which is the best method and if earthing up, how do you stop the soil from falling into the leek?'

Corrugated paper tied round leeks works ok,also sawn off lengths of plastic drainpipe.Earth can easily be washed off by slicing down length, then crossways and rinsing before use.
