Smile Seed Potatoes

Hi All

I've purchased two types of seed potatoes.

First early: Arran Pilot

Second Early: Maris Peer

However the instructions for both of these is to plant them March to May. So my question is what do I do with them between now and the beginning of March. How do I store them?, warm, cold, light or dark?

When should I start to sprout them?

I never knew gardening was going to be so complicated!!

As always advice greartly received.

Kind Regards

Paul

Hi Paul,
If your potatoes have not started to sprout yet keep them in a cool dark place for a couple of weeks then bring them out into a light cool place (must be frost free). Set them, rose end up, in trays to chit. Short green shoots should develop. Plant out end March/April.
If they have already started to sprout set them up to chit now otherwise if left in the dark the sprouts will grow long and white resulting in them breaking off when you plant them out.

Thank you so much. They have been been placed in a cool dark frost free room. They did not have any sprouts so they should be ok.

I will bring them out to chit in a few weeks.

Thanks again

Regards

Paul

Hi again

Well as I said they went int cool sark frost free storage from which I retrevied them yesterday to find that alot of the earlies have already sprouted. They have white shoots about 1" long. A few of the other type of earlies and main crop have also done the same.

They are now is egg trays in a cool, light, frost free, without direct sun light!

So what should I do now?

Leave them as they are for a few weeks then get them in ASAP beofre the sprouts become to long?

Break of the exsisting sprouts so they need to sprout again?

Any advice apprecited.

Best regards

Paul

I would break off existing sprouts as others will soon appear.
