We had an interesting discussion at our recent allotment committee meeting about security, following yet another spate of break ins... The usual pattern of lots of shed damage but nothing taken.
I'm very much of the view that, unless you're going to do your shed up like Fort Knox (which indicates that you really do have something worth stealing) the best approach is to leave the shed door open. I've summarised the options available on allotment security at the link below to help any of our new association members. If you can see anything missing or think I should change anything please let me know. Thanks, John Allotment Heaven: Allotment security |

I wish that sign had applied to some intruders at my local allotments, a few years back the jippos, travellers or as I like to call them portable wasters decided to set up camp just outside the plots. During the weeks they were there you were pestered and intimidated by them every allotment was robbed of things not bolted down and if it was it got vandalised. The police would do nothing until court procedures and the clearup once they had gone cost over £10,000. One poor gentleman had his shed used as the toilet while they were there and not just in one bucket but all over the floor and even upon his workbench, apparently the police were powerless to stop any of this. They are a disgusting poeple that make life misery and also give a bad name to the genuine Gypsy people who generally leave a place tidier than when they arrived.
Rant over. |
