3 November 2011 Winterizing the Yard 3 November 2011 Winterizing the Yard
The yard is almost cleaned up for Winter. Snow will be arriving soon. The bushes and trees were all mulched with wood chips, and the grass cut for the last time of 2011. The various beds have been rototilled to discourage weeds and over wintering insects. I usually plant a cover crop of red clover, but didn’t this year for various reasons. All the spent vegetation has been removed and placed in the compost pile. With the few nice days remaining some more tidying up will be undertaken. Pruning will be done in late Winter or early Spring.

I too am hard at work cleaning up the remenants of Summer before winter sets in, as an aside if you have a pressure washer that you store in a shed, make sure you either bring it inside or empty it of all water. I learnt the hard way last winter that they always have a small amount of water remaining in them. In my case this froze and wrote off a £90 pressure washer! It did say in the small print to keep it out of frost in winter so more fool me, but an easy mistake for anyone to make, with many of us not reading the instructions
