Hi Everyone
I have recently moved house and gained a huge garden and have decided to use a 1/4 of the garden as an allotment at the bottom that backs on to fields. I have been digging it over as it was all grass and weeds. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what weed killier i can put down because there is still some weeds and grass in areas if seems impossible to get every bit out. I would like to start planting in March time and was worried if i was to put a weed killer down would it harm my seeds and things. This the first time i have ever done anything like this and could really do with some advice. Thanks in advance ![]() |

If you want to start growing in March I wouldn't use any weed killer... you don't really want your food being flavoured by round up!
Get out what you can weed wise and then cover the soil, cardboard, black plastic, weed barrier. This will stop the light getting in but warm the soil up so hopefully any weed seeds will germinate which you can then pull up. In your first year, plant lots of potatoes that will break the soil up and provide good ground coverage to keep the weeds at bay. Then as it's your back garden, pop out evey day/evening for half an hour and pull up any weeds, hoe any areas were you can't see and weed growth, this will dislodge the surface soil and seeds that might be thinking of setting down root. Try not to take on too much in the first instance and have fun! |
