Hi, I've just managed to get a plot on a local allotment this week after 3 years of searching. I've started digging over, but I live in rented housing and have never had an opportunity to grow veg etc other than in pots, so I'm a complete novice and haven't really got a clue what I'm doing, so any advice would be brilliant.
My first question is about the weeds.. what is it ok to leave in there, and just turn into the ground, and what do I need to dispose of? I'm pretty sure a lot of the grass is couch grass, so I'm digging all those big white roots out, but there's also lots of smaller roots that it would be impossible to pick out.. do I just leave these? Secondly, do I need to add manure or anything to the soil? And where would I get it from and when do I dig it in? I've read I should dig it in at the beginning of winter so that the grounds ready for spring, but it's January already.. is it still OK to do? Any advice anyone could give me would be appreciated. |

Dig out as much weeds as you can.
Have a chat with other allotment owners to find out how long it has been un worked. They will give you tips I am sure as each plot will be treated differently for different plants IE flowers /veg. I no doubt that others on here will chip in good advice. Good Luck. |
