Poppies are my favourite. All one needs in one or two plants, since one healthy plant will produce about 100 flowers over three weeks. The only poppies that I plant carefully is the papaver somniferum. The hardest work is trying to thin the plants out, and one is rewarded if they are kept about six inches apart. As to insuring germination, I have no firm idea, since they seems to grow when and where they feel like it.

They seem to be predominately a June flower in Zone 5. My pictures were reviewed for Shirley Poppies,(Papaver rhoeas). Most bloomed well up to the middle of June approximately. It appears they prefer slightly cool weather to germinate. All my garden poppies are from seed that over-wintered. There are always some poppy blooms all summer. They are mixed in all or most of the garden area. http://xrl.us/nu2o Poppy Flowering Pictures |

I love Shirley Poppies - I suppose I have to living less than five miles from Shirley!
Noticed from your blog that you have just got your first crocus! My daffs are nearly over and the bluebells are about 2-3 weeks off flowering! Terry |
