Greenfly/squirrel repellent plants for hanging baskets
Hello,
I have a major greenfly and midge problem in my garden, caused by overhanging branches from an enormous sycamore tree in the grounds of the estate my garden backs onto. On top of this, I appear to be on a squirrel highway, and have had problems with them digging up my bulbs or newly dug earth to bury things.
Until we can come to some arrangement to get the horrid tree crowned, I would like to grow some fly and rodent-repelling plants to try and reduce the problem. As most of my garden is taken up by my vegetables and fruit bushes, I am limited for space where I can grow things, so I am planning to put these plants in 'window-box style' hanging baskets along the high fencing around the garden.
I know that calendula and tansy are supposed to be good for repelling flies, and coriander for aphids. Chives also seem to be pretty effective. I know from using the essential oils that mint and lavender are repellent to flies. I know that rue and wormwood are reputed to be good against mice, so could potentially put off the squirrels - but both of these are shrubs. Does anyone know if there are varieties of any of the above plants that can grow in hanging baskets? Or have any alternative suggestions?
The garden is (due to the tree!) quite shady. It is east facing, so gets morning sun. The back fence, where I am planning to put most of the baskets, is the last part of the garden to lose the sun as it moves around behind my house, being fairly warm and sunny until around 3pm.
Many thanks,
Contrary Mary
