Smile Trees for small garden

Hi Guys and Gals

As I've posted before I'm trying to overhaul the back garden. Its a new house (well 10 years old) and therefore, as with the majority of new houses, the garden is small. It needs some height so looking for suggestions for small trees.

As a start I'm thinking about the fir trees I saw in Tuscany - I think they are called Italian Cypress (correct me if wrong). I believe they are narrow and the roots go straight down and don't spread outwards.

Any other small trees you'd like to suggest and the best (cheapest!) source.

Take care

George

You can prune it back to keep it the size you desire, but it may not do well if it is a large variety tree. a patio pot would not be sufficient for the root system. the best you can do is try.

What about growing strawbery's tree, it's small and doesn't take a big space. Good luck!

I would avoid bay trees if its a windy area. Personally I have a garden full of palm trees, and whilst they can grow big, if you keep them in a pot you will be able to keep them from growing too big e.g. they only grow huge when planted in the ground. They can be wrapped in a fleece in Winter if you get a lot of frost.

acer palmatum 'blood good' or 'osakazuki'.

maybe a golden yew rather than the cypress, bit more interesting etc.

ornamental cherries and crab apples are also an option if they are grown on dwarf rootstock.
