Winter flower bed

I've just pulled the bedding flowers from my front garden and the narrow flower beds against the wall of the house are looking somewhat bare. At this time of the year, I notice that the councils tend to go for Pansy and Primula in the parks and town centres. Are these the only choices we have? I know there are good choice of lovely bulb flowers that you can plant around now but instant flower colour now would be nice.
