Question Removing dead Ivy

I had a large Ivy growing up the front of the house which I have managed to kill and removed from the walls, the walls look a mess because of all the sticky roots. Has anyone got any tips on how to remove the mess other than using a wire brush?

I think part of it depends on if you have bricks or stone underneath.

I found this for you, but try googling for advice?

I've also heard of people using brick cleaner, but I really have no experience of it sorry.
