Hello everyone, hope you are all well and staying warm! Last week I watched river cottage and saw (actually heard! as the children distracted me away from the t.v)the lovely Hugh making hedgerow hoisin sauce from Haw berries. Being a bit of a thickie, I wondered are Haw Berries the same as sloes?, if not do you think they might be interchangeable in recipes? We are surrounded by sloes, and if i make any more gin the neighbours will start talking! Many thanks o great gardening oracles xx

Susan I've just realised that I have lots of haws on the hawthorn in our hedge! They are little red berries. Sloes are from the Blackthorn and they can be used to make jam, jelly, cheese and I think I've seen a chutney recipe. I'll have a look to find them.

Thank you John boy and Lesley Jay, have picked Hawthorn berries and followed the recipe from the river cottage website, however Haw-sin sauce is now in the green bin due to the huge amounts of mini maggots that bubbled to the top of the pan. I had soaked the berries overnight but obviously Hugh FWhittiwotsit has posher hawthorn bushes than a mere mortal such as I!!! but thanks again .
